Delhi HC hears plea seeking declaration of criminal antecedents of those contesting DSGMC elections

On a plea filed before the Delhi High Court, the Division Bench comprising of the Chief Justice today heard the matter relating to declaration of criminal antecedents of candidates contesting the elections of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee conducted by the Directorate of Gurdwara Elections, GNCTD.

Advocates Rajat Wadhwa and Harpreet Singh Hora represented the Petitioner Advocate Kuljeet Singh Sachdeva in the Petition. The Petition was filed for taking action against the parties (named in the Petition) as per the directions given in the judgment of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India titled “Public Interest Foundation v. Union of India” Writ Petition No. 536/2011 and contempt Petition titled “Ram Babu Singh Thakur v. Sunil Arora” Contempt Petition no. 2192 of 2020.

The Petition mentions that it is a matter of common knowledge that many contestants have criminal antecedents but such antecedents are not brought to the knowledge of the voters, but since the judgment of the Supreme Court is not implemented by the Directorate in conducting the nomination.

The Bench has directed the Respondents to treat the petition as representation and take a decision as expeditiously as possible.
